Things That Cannot Die by Paige Riehl
A spoon in a cup of tea.
Letters in yellow envelopes,
the way a hand pushed lines
into the soft paper.
Morning laughter.
A white shirt draped
over her chair.
An open window. The air.
Call of one blackbird.
Silence of another.
November. Summer.
My love for you, I say.
My love for you infinity
times a million, my son says.
Sounds of piano notes
as they rest in treetops.
The road from here to there.
Grief, that floating, lost swan.
Other poems I enjoyed reading this week:
"It is a constant pestering
in my ears, a caught moth, limping drum,
a child’s fist beating
itself against the bedsprings:
I want, I don’t want.
How can one live with such a heart?
Long ago I gave up singing
to it, it will never be satisfied or lulled.
One night I will say to it:
Heart, be still,
and it will." -from The Woman Who Could Not Live With Her Faulty Heart by Margaret Atwood
"the peacock means order
the fighting kangaroos mean madness
the oasis means I have struck water
positioning of the stamp — the despot’s head
horizontal, or ‘mounted policemen’,
mean political danger
the false date means I
am not where I should be
when I speak of the weather
I mean business
a blank postcard says
I am in the wilderness" -Translations of my Postcards by Michael Ondaatje.
"Let the people who never find true love
keep saying that there’s no such thing.
Their faith will make it easier for them to live and die." -from True Love by Wislawa Szymborska
"I give myself five days to forget you.
On the first day I rust.
On the second I wilt.
On the third day I sit with friends but I think about your tongue.
I clean my room on the fourth day. I clean my body on the fourth day.
I try to replace your scent on the fourth day.
The fifth day, I adorn myself like the mouth of an inmate.
A wedding singer dressed in borrowed gold.
The midas of cheap metal.
Tinsel in the middle of summer.
Crevice glitter, two days after the party.
I glow the way unwanted things do,
a neon sign that reads:
Come, I still taste like someone else’s mouth." -Residue by Warsan Shire

Lastly, please go and watch Luke Pearson's brilliant animated series Hilda on Netflix if you haven't already. It's beyond beautiful, and has inspired me to doodle plenty since and while watching it. Also, did I mention how beautiful and adorable it is? :D
