Winter on my Mind: Part V
Four photography series on winter + poetry compilations from the journal
A big thank you to everyone who contributed to the journal for the Winter theme! Here’s the last of our features from the January calendar:
// Photography
1. Winter Perspective by Yamuna Matheswaran
“Unlike the cosiness of autumn, winter makes me think of barren trees and grey, still days, but I also find it to be an invaluable time for reflection and creative growth. I spend much of the coldest months bundled up indoors, peering out of the window on occasion as I work, read, cook, or just relax. So for the photography section, I'm sharing a series called Winter Perspective, which depicts windows in different settings letting light into our intimate spaces or offering glimpses of other worlds.”
-Yamuna Matheswaran

2. What Dreams May Come by Vijay Sarathy
“What Dreams May Come is a series of photographs made over the past few winters while sheltering in the Himalayas. Drawing from fragments of felt-truth of beauty and personal memories, it's a dream-like recollection of days spent looking out of the window from my snowed-in room, and on morning walks through a dense forest. Beyond its association with stillness and quiet, winter for me has always been a time for feverish daydreaming - to roam the gardens of my mind without anything from the outside world to intervene.”
-Vijay Sarathy

2. In search of winter lights: A love letter by Sneha Raman
“You accept that you are afraid. Deathly scared of what the future will hold, how the past will affect the present, all of them weighing down on you - making it so tiring that you want to give up, but: you are simultaneously driven by hope. That one light that shines through, that one aspect of life, where you follow your heart, and do what brings you peace. That is giving you the energy and space to tackle the other elements of your life that you think are in your control - it may or may not be the case. You are learning to breathe through these contradictory feelings.”
-Sneha Raman

4. Mumbai winter, near sea by Altamash Kadir
“The set of photographs attached to this essay depict the aftermath of rains to clouds with an implicit theme of barriers co-habitation and coexistence with keeping the responsibility of climate change in mind. This progresses linearly unlike the seasons, and slightly, abstractly much like winter. The condition this curation follows is irony.”
-Altamash Kadir

Winter Closet by Kruthika Jerome (Excerpt)
My father always said,
Winters are liked by those
who own coats.
Why else is the grey
beautiful
If not for the cosy corners
And gloves that keep you warm? But I never understood that,
until,
this winter.
